Are any of you frustrated with no YouTube official performances being posted? If you’re like me, you also want high quality, legit performance videos if your favorite k-pop group, right?
Well, I’m happy to say I did find it through JTBC’s official VLive app – which you can watch on your desktop. These are just for BTS, though I may try and sort through additional performances from other groups later.
Question #15: A k-pop song that reminds you of of a time or moment you miss
The original question was which k-pop song reminds you of some one you miss. Other than my first answer, there hasn’t been any song which reminds me of anyone from my past.
However, music will, whether k-pop or non-kpop, remind me of a time or place from my past.
Super Junior’s One More Time came during a phase where a lot of k-pop artists were taking on Latin American vibes. This one in particular brings me back to all those trips I’ve taken down south, finding myself on white sandy beaches.
Question #16: Favorite k-pop lyric (and a translation)
BTS actually has a lot of deep and meaningful lyrics. I’m still shook with the double-meaning behind Pied Piper. It’s evident they are having a conversation with ARMY. On the one hand, there’s a seductive lure. Yet on the other hand, they warn ARMY not to fall so much into the obsession where it controls one’s life in a negative way. This duo-message is both playful and yet carries a deep warning. I imagine they are saying they can’t help how they might cause a magnetic connection which draws us into them… yet they ask us to be cautious with how far we may fall down that rabbit hole.
Along with the way BTS performs this song, it is quite captivating.
Pied Piper Lyrics (Translated/English)
[Verse 1: Jungkook] It’s bad so it’s better You know on the inside You can’t stop it now (you can’t stop) So be honest with me
[Verse 2: Rap Monster] Stop Now stop watching and study for your test Your parents and boss hate me Video clips, pictures, tweets V app, Bon Voyage I know, you can’t help what you like But stop, interpret the music video later You have so many pictures of me in your room anyway It’s not just one hour, it’s a whole year that’ll disappear So this song is an award I’m giving to you Good
[Pre-Chorus: Jin, V] You’re not being punished Come here, I’m your paradise Can’t close your eyes Can’t close your eyes You can throw a fit but it’s no use (Don’t reject me) Just close your eyes, tune your ears
[Chorus: Jimin, Jungkook] Follow the sound of the pipe, follow this song It’s a bit dangerous but I’m so sweet I’m here to save you, I’m here to ruin you You called me, see? I’m so sweet Follow the sound of the pipe I’m takin’ over you I’m takin’ over you
[Verse 3: V, Suga] You know that it’s already begun The moment you hear that sound Maybe I’m a bit dangerous Like the pied piper I’m testing you Like the fruit from the tree of good and evil
[Verse 4: J-Hope] My pipe awakens everything That sound burns you up even more You’re pulled by it, you react I’m endlessly blowing I’m your guilty pleasure You can’t escape Never
[Pre-Chorus: Jungkook, Jimin] You’re not being punished Come here, I’m your paradise Can’t close your eyes Can’t close your eyes You can throw a fit but it’s no use (Don’t reject me) Just close your eyes, tune your ears
[Chorus: Jin, V] Follow the sound of the pipe, follow this song It’s a bit dangerous but I’m so sweet I’m here to save you, I’m here to ruin you You called me, see? I’m so sweet Follow the sound of the pipe
[Bridge: Jungkook] Yeah, I’m a bit dangerous I can’t even handle myself Don’t worry, my hands They’re only warm for you
[Outro: Jimin, Jungkook] If I’m ruining you right now Please forgive me Because you can’t live without me Because you know all of this I’m takin’ over you I’m takin’ over you
Ha ha! Um… my answer hasn’t changed much. I have learned very little Korean since I started my love for k-pop. I think if I had the time I could learn the words to some of my favorite songs. But alas, when it comes to using my free-time to learn another language, I’m currently trying to just improve my Mandarin speaking skills (I’ve been watching a lot of C-Dramas on Netflix while trying to not read the subtitles).
Having said that, the other day while listening to Boy In Luv by BTS, I caught myself singing along to most of the lyrics! That surprised me. I suppose it was bound to happen so I thought that was pretty cool. I don’t know the full lyrics, though. And I’d have to sing along with it – as I can’t sing it on my own.
Question #9: Favorite k-pop performance
Well… there’s been a lot of phenomenal live performances. With BTS’ fast-growth not just in Asia but by international standards, they really have been given more and more stage time at the various main Asian music award shows. The MMAs 2019 gave them a total of 37 minutes allowing BTS to really show their artistry. And because they ended with Dionysus, this is currently my favorite live k-pop performance.
Some other honorable mentions:
BTS’ 2019 Golden Disk Awards performance of FAKE LOVE stood out due to the symbolic intro. Many k-pop fans, especially ARMY, understand the meaning behind their marionette puppets intro. Which was a subtle message at a huge k-pop industry award show. Idols face such harsh control by the industry and fans alike, they often lose who they truly are (at an age they are supposed to be finding themselves – alas that is another topic for another time).
BTS’ performance of IDOL at the 2018 MMAs showed a beautiful mix of contemporary and cultural dance as the intro. I love it when they do this! Plus we witnessed female performers which is a huge move for a male k-pop group to do (i.e. too many jealous fans).
Sunmi ft. Taemin’s Gashina performance was iconic! And damn sexy. I always love watching Sunmi live, though. Her facial expressions are point on. She’s stunning and certainly a queen.
AOA’s cover of MAMAMOO’s Egotistic remix must be mentioned. The performance was stellar but I loved how they brought out the drag queens in the end. AOA danced in tailored suits along with the drag queens and brought the house down!
I’m simply very happy for and proud of TXT for winning New Artist of the Year at the MMA 2019. Their extended New Rule and Run Away performance was a great show for such a rookie group. BTS supported them throughout the show, with a big stand-up applause and cheer from their seniors when they were announced for the win.
Congrats also go out to BTS for being the first to win all 4 Daesang categories at an end of the year Asian Award Show!
The last comeback post I created didn’t do (G)I-dle’s latest comeback, LION, justice. Not at all. And that is shameful of me. I even said I still liked Uh-Oh more. What was I thinking?
So I want to continue on about how much I love this song. After seeing it on their comeback stage and listening to it a couple of more times, I pretty much am now on my knees bowing to this song.
Hey – I still love Uh-Oh, but LION? God damn!
One thing I noticed is how much power their performance pours out from the stage. And not just from the members themselves. I was very impressed with their back-up dancers as well.
(G)I-dle also has shown they can put out different sounds song after song. And there’s a more even line-distribution than other groups. While I lack confidence in CUBE Entertainment, I have confidence (G)I-dle can go far if managed properly (though there lies the problem – CUBE is notorious for being a shitty management company for female groups/artists).
